High Altitude Cosmic Ray Radiation Detection

چکیده

Earth’s atmosphere is constantly being bombarded with cosmic rays. However, the origin and effect of this radiation is relatively unknown. We report on the results of a payload that was launched on the balloon sat EOSS flight 201 under the fall DemoSAT program for the COSGC. The payload was designed to measure these cosmic rays using an onboard geiger counter. These results are intended to be used as a baseline for future projects regarding cosmic radiation measurement. Additionally, we report on the benefits and pitfalls of different construction methods used along with their potential application for future flights. Lastly, we discuss some of the more interesting trends in radiation levels as a function of altitude and offer some preliminary explanations.

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Air fluorescence yield dependence on atmospheric parameters

The fluorescence detection of ultra high energy cosmic rays requires a detailed knowledge of the fluorescence light emission from nitrogen molecules over a wide range of atmospheric parameters, corresponding to altitudes typical of the cosmic ray shower development in the atmosphere. We have made a precise measurement of the fluorescence light spectrum excited by MeV electrons in air. The relat...

Space Environment and Evaluation of Typical High Altitude Satellite

The space environment consists mainly of high-energy charged particles, such as protons, electrons and heavy ions. They are originating from several sources including galactic cosmic radiation, solar flares and van Allen belts. High energy electromagnetic radiation and neutrons have also been measured on spacecraft. Although shielding can reduce the effect of space radiation it cannot be elimin...

Towards a Solution of the Knee

— Cosmic rays physics is currently being studied with rather sophisticated detectors running in a variety of experimental conditions and atmospheric depths around the world. In this paper we describe the reasons why cosmic ray physics experiments at high altitudes like Chacaltaya are so important for resolving some of the open problems in cosmic physics. A discussion on the future prospects of ...

Altitude variations of cosmic ray induced production of aerosols: Implications for global cloudiness and climate

[1] The indirect radiative forcing of atmospheric aerosols is sensitive to particle size and concentration, which are influenced significantly by nucleation processes. Via its role in aerosol formation, cosmic ray may affect the cloud condensation nuclei abundance and hence the global cloud properties and climate. Systematic variations in ionization rates due to the modulation of cosmic ray rad...

Cancer mortality rates and the flux of cosmic ray neutrons appear to share some common features

It is well established experimentally that cosmic ray neutrons are a source of soft errors in silicon based microelectronics. The mechanism which produces the errors appears to be the detection of the high density of charge associated with the production of alpha particles in the semiconductor by the neutrons. In vitro experiments using alpha particles, and an end point of chromosomal rearrange...
